Yellowjackets is a creepy survival of a group of teenage girls who get lost in the forest and find unconventional and dark ways of surviving. It is the thriller type of show that Scream Queens is making fun of. But this is the real deal thriller. This is not a show to watch alone, in the dark, right before bed, like I did. Due to the dark and creepy nature, I suggest watching it with a large group of people during broad daylight and nowhere near bed time.
Premise of Yellowjackets
A high school girl’s soccer team called the Yellowjackets, are the best in New Jersey. They are so good, they are invited to compete in the national tournament. Thanks to one of the girl’s fathers, they have the luxury of taking a private plane to Washington for the competition. But somewhere in the wilderness, the plane crashes and the team finds themselves, their assistant coach, and the head coach’s two sons stranded.
Fast forward thirty years. Although they have been rescued, the even still haunts them. We learn in episode one that they were stuck out there for 19 months. We also learn that by the end of the 19 months, they had developed their own sinful culture.
Because the story jumps back and forth, we know that some of the girls survive but never want to talk about it. We also quickly learn, who did not make it to present day. We also do not know who made it out of the wilderness but is not involved with the group in current day.
How Yellowjackets is a Creepy and a Sinful Survival Story
The creep factor surrounds the flashbacks to when they are stranded in the wilderness. The scenes are often dark and there are sounds of girls moaning. Part of the plot of these parts are full of spirits and ghosts. And when the screen is not full of the supernatural, it is full of the so real you can touch it, wilderness.
The sinful piece is very much apparent. There are premonitions and religious symbols. There are exorcisms and sances. Although the story of being trapped starts light, by the end, it is full of a heavy sinfully religious undertone. With the darkness of it all, I had nightmares every night after watching it.
Final Thoughts
The final episode of the first season answered very little to the questions that arose in the first episode. There is a huge gap between where the first episode shows the end of their stay in the wilderness and where the last episode ends up. This implies there is much more to come. And I will be watching the next season. But this time, in broad daylight with another person near by.
