It was time to watch the Big Chill. The Big Chill was on my movie shelf growing up. My parents had the Big Chill soundtrack. My parents clearly liked the The Big Chill and watched The Big Chill multiple times. But here I am over 34 years old, and watching a 37 year old movie that I have had plenty of previous opportunity to watch. And I am now watching it for the first time. So, why now? Why watch The Big Chill now? Once again, please thank my friends at Movie Crush.
The Big Chill Is An Adult Film
Now that I to watch The Big Chill is in the past, I know EXACTLY why I was not allowed to watch it. ALL the themes in this movie are very adult. The excessive drinking, the sex, the pills, the cocaine. There is infidelity and… accepted infidelity. And a lot of talk about death and what it means to lose someone very close to them. My somewhat protective parents were not about to let their eight year old watch this type of thing. Nor do I think I would understand it and I doubt they would have wanted to explain it.
The only scene that I had viewed up until now was when Kevin Kline and Glenn Close‘s characters had snorted cocaine and Close is jumping all over the bed under the influence of the drug. As a side node, when I did see this scene, I was also told at the time, that they were on heroin.
The Premise
The storyline follows a handful of friends from Michigan State University who haven’t talked to each other in over 15 years after another friend from college, Alex, dies. The only exception is Alex’s very eccentric girlfriend, which Jeff Goldblum‘s very sleazy character is trying very hard to… console.
As always with great movies with great characters, I need to write about the cast. Once again, this cast is all star. I have already dropped a number of big names in this post. But I also need to shout out to William Hurt and Mary Kay Place. I mean, Wow! And none of these actors are disappointing in their way to play these characters.
Final Thoughts
Loved this very simple and very thought out movie. I am up to watch The Big Chill again and again… And I absolutely want to buy the house. The cast, the house, the story, it is all beautiful and put well together. There are many reason to watch this movie.
