Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: A Tale of Unsurpassed Eyebrows You Want

First thing is first, if you get nothing else out of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, you will get some nice eyebrows.

About Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Eyebrows aside, I really really really hate to say it, but I really enjoyed this movie. What really drove me into the movie is the visuals. The CGI, the sets, and the costumes are great. There is a lot of creativity put into this movie. And although it will never be considered a great piece of art, I think it is more than just a teeny bopper movie it appears to be.

However, there are quite a few holes in the plot, very confusing parts, and A LOT of unnecessary scenes for the sake of doing something cool. Although I loved the costume choices, they are clearly made for visual purposes and not because for practicality. Doing very physical work in metal suites with boobs or a bathing suite just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The plot is a bit like someone vomited Si-Fi all over this movie by taking every cliche Si-Fi story line and stitching it all together.

The romance plot of the movie is touched on in the beginning and the end and never throughout the movie. Because of the demographic this movie is trying to reach (teenagers), perhaps the love piece makes sense. But as an adult, no thanks. The male character, Valerian, has a “playlist” of girls but wants the female character to be his wife. They go through this whole event where he almost dies and it’s only then that she decides he loves him back.

Rhianna’s Cameo

You can’t talk about this movie without bringing up about Rhianna. Holy cow! Her performance is by far the highlight of the movie. Her part is short but her one and only purpose is to dance with a costume change every 10 seconds.

Final Thoughts

All in all, it was entertaining and I did find myself to tear myself away. Will I see it again? Probably not on purpose. Do I wish I got that 2 hrs and 17 min back? No, I’m okay with the time I spent on this movie. But I will say, there are much better movies out there.
