Married At First Sight: These People Are Crazy

Married At First Sight: These People Are Crazy

My newest trashy television obsession is Married at First Sight. All I can think through watching this show is how normal these people seem but they can’t be. These people are crazy to go through this “experiment.” They are legally binding themselves to someone they have never met. They are making a decision that people who have been in a relationship for a long time have difficulty making.

The Premise of Married At First Sight

The premise of this show is exactly what it sounds like, strangers meet on the altar on their wedding day. They are then followed by cameras during their honeymoon, moving in together, consummating their marriage, talking about having babies and other things normal couples do. This whole thing lasts for six weeks when they are then asked if they would like to stay married. Through the whole process, there are marriage counselors to help them with any difficulties they face.

They call this show an experiment. But if this was an experiment, wouldn’t the cameras not be so involved? Wouldn’t the producers not be there at all? Wouldn’t there be more than three couples at any given season? Especially, when each season has thousands of applicants.

Season 4

Since Hulu starts at season 4, that is where I started. Like every other season, there are three couples, Derek and Heather, Nick and Sonia, and Lillian and Tom. These couples had never met before and they do not know each other. Basically, these people are crazy.

Derek and Heather did not even make it through their honeymoon. Heather turned if off almost immediately, and I don’t really blame her, he was a bit weird. Their fights were hard to watch as he would go straight for the jugular when she is just trying to address an issue. My favorite part of their story was when they got hammered together on their honeymoon.

Nick and Sonia was probably my favorite couple. I didn’t like Nick as much as I enjoyed Sonia. She is adorable and I was rooting her on more than them as a couple. As a dog lover, my favorite part of their story was to watch her with his dogs and learn to love them.

For the last couple, Tom and Lillian, their story did not have enough conflict to make their story really exciting. The biggest conflict was that she works a lot and he works only when he needs to. They seemed like they were a good match and would last; however, a quick Google search shows that they are not still together. Frowny face.

Season 5

I just started season 5 and am only four episodes in. The three couples are Nathan and Sheila, Anthony and Ashley, and Cody and Danielle. Since we are only watching honeymoon, the conflict has been quite minimal. Sex is the big topic for all three couples and I find myself waiting for the news that each couple has consummated their marriage.

My favorite couple so far is Cody and Danielle. I still put them in the group of these people are crazy, but at the same time, they seem so down to earth and really wanting this to work. I’ll continue to watch these crazy people and see what comes next.

Final Thoughts

From my past posts, it’s clear I enjoy my fair share of trashy television. I especially enjoy trashy television where the people are crazy or do crazy things and this show definitely fits the bill. I’m running through all my single friends in my head, trying to figure out who I should pressure in marrying a stranger. Thank goodness I’m taken or I might have submitted myself.
