The title gives this book away. Clearly there is a wife upstairs. We learn that early in the book too. But why is she up there? How come the new wife doesn’t know she is there? Why can’t she come down stairs? These are all questions to ask when turning the first pages.
Premise of The Wife Upstairs
We meet Jane. Jane is a dog walker for the rich in Birmingham, Alabama. Jane is not from Birmingham, but has recently moved there from Arizona to get away from her old life. Jane has secrets.
Then we meet Eddie. The rich man who takes a liking to Jane. His wife and her best friend recently went missing. She is presumed dead and Eddie inherits all his wife’s assets including her company, a southern take on home decor, clothing, an accessories. Eddie also has secrets.
The rest of the book reveals their secrets one by one and they fall more and more in love. At what point will they let the other one in?
My Love of Chick Lit Thrillers
It is no wonder that I loved The Wife Upstairs. It has everything I love in a book: thrill, secrets, a murder, twists, and of course, turns. Reading this book felt very much like my other favorites, The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine and The Push by Ashley Audrain.
Final Thoughts
I am a big fan of thrillers of the chick lit persuasion and that is exactly what The Wife Upstairs was. Very highly recommending for anyone who loves a book that twists and turns. I am looking forward to see what Rachel Hawkins puts out next.
