The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of the most brilliant television shows that have come out in the last past few years. The writing is great. The costumes and sets are amazing. The execution of this show is 100% spot on. This is a show to put on a binge watch list for those nights in.
Premise of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
After a frustrating night with her family, Miriam Maisel, finds herself drunk on stage telling her life story to the audience. In a world where there are no funny women, Miriam is actually funny. Not just for a female, but for a man too and Susie Myerson sees this in her and wants to make her a professional comedian. On this climb to making a Miriam a famous comedian, there are many hurdles they must overcome.
This storyline could be successful during any time period, with people of any heritage, in any city. But the creators set the story in the 1950s, with a Jewish family, in New York. In my opinion, that is the right choice. Yes, this story could be told in a different fashion but these choices give much more for the writers to work with and therefore a storyline that does not get tired.
Comedy In Comedy
There is nothing unique or funny about a comedy show about comedy. In order to do this successfully, takes perfect execution. It is like a screen play about a screen write or a book about a writer. Write what you know, but if it is an obvious subject, the topic gets to be cliche. But not with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Execution on the comedy is spot on. There will be laughter during the stand up bits on stage and there will be laughter in Miriam’s home while speaking with her parents. This show is full of well executed comedy.
The Fashion
There is not an outfit Miriam wears that have not made me wish I lived through the 1950s. And it is no surprise that they are all beautiful as she old wears Chanel, Prada and other designer brands. Bring on the classic designer looks! Her fashion has brought the 1950s style back into mainstream and I love it.
Final Thoughts
With season four tied up in a neat bow, the public can only wait for the next season to be announced. That being said, I would be concern that they will not be able to execute on the show as swimmingly as they have in prior seasons. If there is a fifth season, I will be watching it but I pray that it is just as good as all the seasons before.
