This is the second book I have read by Karin Slaughter and DAMN! her books are good! These books cater to my love of true crime and my love of fiction. Unlike true crime, through the nature of fiction writing, I get to know all the gory details that make me cringe. I am happy to sit on my couch and observe the fiction knowing it’s just that, fiction.
There Is A Lot Of Rape In The Last Widow
If the word “rape” is a trigger word for you, this book is not for you. It is said so many times that there is a piece of dialog where Will, one of the main characters, comments that he just said “rape” 80 times to his mother in-law. But if rape doesn’t scare you off, what about mass bombings, stabbings, white supremacy, biological warfare, and petofilia? Still interested?

But in all reality, I don’t think most writers could pull off what Slaughter does. All the details are horrifying and gross, yet it pulls together as an attention grabbing story and I can’t pull myself away from it. Her style is to revisit the same moments and the same stories, exposing new details each time. These moments are sometimes from different perspectives and other times on the other side of a phone, an attack, a call for help, or some other important information Slaughter wants the reader to know.
Premise of The Last Widow
The Last Widow starts with an explosion at a hospital. A doctor and cop couple are nearby and go to play peacekeeper and save lives. While they think they are being helpful, they find themselves in the middle of an even bigger attack on humanity all in the sake to make Sarah, another main character, the last widow of her kind. As the story unravels, there are gasp worthy moments at every twists and turns.
Final Thoughts
It is action, thriller, and a baby bit love story. But it’s all excitement! Like the other book I ready by Slaughter, I am hooked. She will be an author I watch and an author I continue to write. Anything new that comes out that she writes will be on my read list.
