The Duke and I is the first book in the Bridgerton Series that was made into a television series that has taken the world by storm. The heat of the book, and television series, has had women talking about it like it was Fifty Shades of Gray. It was a book that got this author wanting to read the rest of the books in the Bridgerton Series.
Premise of The Duke And I
In this first book, we meet the Bridgerton family, a mother and her eight children. This book focuses on the fourth child, Daphne. Named with a “D” name because she is fourth of the Bridgerton children. Daphne has just reached the age where she can start courting men to marry her; however, she has few prospects.
In comes the Duke, Simon. Simon had disappointed his father his whole life due to a stutter to the point where his father told people that his son had died. He would rather have a dead son than a stupid one. Simon’s response was to do the exact opposite of what his now deceased father would have wanted. Meaning he will never marry nor have children. Then he meets Daphne.
The rest of the story is about how the two, Daphne and Simon, fall in love. Daphne discovers sex and soon discovers that Simon does not want to have children rather than cannot have them. They have a lovers quarrel over the topic of children and, at the end, one of them gives in.
The Rest of The Bridgerton Series
This is the book that made the television series popular and I can see why. The television series hints to the upcoming storylines of the other books which makes me excited to pick up the next one. At this point, with the second season of the television series out and popular, I am likely to read the second Bridgerton book sooner that I would otherwise.
Final Thoughts
The Duke and I was a light book as promised, but had enough juice packed into it to make me excited to read the next book in the series. The television series has been great so far but I do not know where I stand, if the book was better or the television series. I am a big fan of reading the book before watching the movie or television series. For those reasons, I will be picking up the next book sooner than I normally would.
