Stephen King’s It is not just story of a big scary clown, as one may think, it is the story of everything that ever gives nightmares. To one character, It is a werewolf. To another character, It is a leper. And to another, It is her abusive father. It is scary not because It is just a clown, It is scary because It is fear itself and it lives under the city. It is not a specific thing, Stephen King’s It is a monster bigger than anything.
Premise Of Stephen King’s It
It starts in Dairy, Maine where George, a young child, was brutally murdered. Just like George, every twenty seven or twenty eight years, there is a mass murder of children in this town. We then meet the seven loser youth of this small town including George’s brother. We learn how they all meet and what they all have in common that causes them to call themselves The Losers. They have experienced Pennywise the clown, through evil and need to come together to get rid of It once and for all.
The book jumps between the group trying to kill Pennywise the clown and them as adults twenty seven years later. They are being called back to Dairy as they now need to attempt It’s murder again. Although they cannot remember any of the details of this traumatizing time in their lives upon arrival, they slowly begin to remember and the story of their youth starts to tie into the now story, of their adulthood.
The Brilliance of Stephen King
My understanding of Stephen King was that he was a writer of scary books for boring adults. It was not until I read The Gunslinger without knowing it was written by Stephen King that I realized it was a good book, but can he do it again? Many years later I picked up The Institution. When I looked at his list of books and the number of movies I have enjoyed that he had written, I was hooked. It became a quick add to my list of to read books. I am now ready for a Stephen King marathon. What is next? The Shining? Misery? Or perhaps, Carrie?
Final Thoughts
I am a big fan of thriller books and Stephen King’s It is the mother of all thriller books. Not only is it written by the king of thriller books, it is one of his most famous books ever. Although it is a long book, for any thriller reader, it is a must read. Then you too can be hooked on Stephen King and his crazy Imagination.
