Except for the need to watch Scrubs to keep up with Fake Doctors Real Friends, I was ready to cancel my Hulu subscription. And then I found it, Seasons upon Seasons of the amazing Saturday Night Live. I have now seen seasons 45 and 46 and I am pretty hooked.
Comparing Seasons 45 and 46 To Previous Seasons
Like most Americans, I have been watching Saturday Night Live since I was a child. I was delighted by the old versions as well as the live show broadcasted on Saturday night, usually waiting for the rerun as I rarely could keep my eyes open that late.
Between the live television aspect that is no longer exciting and the cast members that people loved leaving, it seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth. And for me that was true, until now. The trick to enjoying the seasons is to take them at face value and not to compare them to any of the previous seasons.
The Current Cast
Although there are a few cast members I have come to love, I don’t really come for the cast, I come for the writing. Apart from Kate McKinnon and Pete Davidson, many of the other cast members could replace other cast members. This is very different from past seasons where cast members play very specific characters that fit their specific comedy type. On that note, I also need to shout out to Collin Jost and Micheal Che who have a great banter that also can not be replaced by other cast members.
Old Cast Members And Celebrities in These Seasons
The other aspect of casting that has kept these seasons together, especially in the political sketches, is that many of the old cast members and past hosts come by for cameos. During the election period, Maya Rudolph joined in as Kamala Harris. Larry David would play Bernie Sanders. And most famous of all, Jim Carrey as Joe Biden and Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump.
Final Thoughts
Saturday Night Live has not lost me as a view. Not now and not ever. As long as the sketches they come out with are laugh out loud funny, I will continue to watch.
