I could not put down Nevermoor: The trials of Morrigan Crow! Every page I was on my toes and every page caused me to keep going, turning page after page to find out what happens next. It is not a thin book but it’s definitely an easy read. As someone who is a relatively slow reader, I got through this book at record speed.
The Premise of Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
It all starts with Morrigan Crow, who is cursed child in the state she lives in called the Republic. And when a child is cursed, they will die on Eventide, which is fast approaching. While she is still alive, her family acts as though she is already gone and very replaceable.
Until one night when she receives a letter inviting her to try out to join the Wundrous Society. She thinks it’s a hoax and brushes it off until Jupiter shows up. And he whisks her away in his mechanical spider to a magical land and to try out to join the Wundrous Society. There are different creatures and made up games to be played and magical items and all kinds of interesting places. And around every turn is a different way of seeing the world in which she came from.
Why This Book Is For Harry Potter Fans
Sounds a bit like Harry Potter, huh? An orphan child who happens to have a lot of magic is a magical world who then gets sent off to a boarding school to learn how to use these magical powers. It kinda feels like a Harry Potter knock off. That being said, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. And in fact, enjoyed it very much. I feel like this is for the people who want more of Harry Potter in a different flavor. There is only so many books of Harry Potter and Nevermoor series offers much more of the same flavor.
If the format works, then keep it going. Take that format, put some spins on it, and execute with great writing. Given this format, I would expect there will be many more books like this coming in the near future. If this is the case, assuming it is well done like the Nevermoor series, I say bring it on!
My Final Thoughts
I loved this book. I will be reading all the rest of the books in the series. And I will be looking forward to anything Jessica Townsend does in the future.
