Midsommer is a crazy crazy movie. Although the movie was bright and light visually, it was also completely dark in nature, it is the brightest dark movie I have ever seen. I get why it had such a craze not that long ago, that being said, I never want to watch this movie again. I am not typically a horror movie fan and I was hoping this movie would converted me but it did not. Please bring be back to the light airy movies I am use to.
The Premise of Midsommer
A group of Americans are pursuing a masters degree in anthropology. As a group they go with their Swedish friend to his home country of Sweden to look into some of their rituals. We quickly learn that he lives with a community in the countryside where it never gets dark in the Summer. Included in the group of Americans, is one of the student’s girlfriend who recently experienced a traumatic event, which left her destroyed and filled with anxiety. This trip was intended to take her out of her head and enlighten her into relieving some of this stress. But the situation is not as relaxing as they thought it may be.
The weirdness starts with taking magical mushrooms and then some odd rituals start to occur. These rituals are at first taken at face value as a cultural difference, but then the movie escalates quickly. It starts with the suicide of the elderly of the community, which again is described as cultural. And then quickly moving on to the disappearance and death of other Americans, which is also explained as a cultural difference to the way the Americans are use to running things. But there is a difference between cultural difference and just plain wrong.
The Brightest Dark Movie
The visual tone of Midsommer is bright and pastel colored. This is not the typical pallet of a horror movie. This is of course one of the reasons why this movie is so creepy and so I would consider the brightest dark movie. The creep factor of this movie intensifies when it comes to mind that this storyline is not so far fetched. With the crazy cults that have surfaced in America, there is absolutely a possibility of crazy cults in Sweden as well.
Final Thoughts
Midsommer is a very unique movie in both visualizations and in storyline. I am happy to say I was able to check it off my list. That being said, the creep factor of the storyline was too high to ever watch again. I will pass if it comes across my plate again. Check please!
