Lupin is the French daring master of disguise and robbery. From the first episode we know that he pretends to be a petty theft but by the end of the first episode, we know that he is much smarter than that. The story bounces between the main character’s childhood and today and the two stories start to weave together.
Premise of Lupin
Lupin is a thief and a pretty good one at that. Always one step ahead of the target, always preparing for the inevitable action they make. Where did he learn his meticulous practices? From a book. Where did he get this book? From his father. The same person who, after a prized and expensive necklace is stolen, is suspected of being a thief as well. Now he is determined to prove his father was not the thief of the necklace and to get the truth out to the public.
The Books
The series is based on the adventures of Arsène Lupin, a 24 book series by French author, Maurice LeBlanc. The television show highlights this by explaining that the thieve gets his tactects from studying a book. The book has a man in a top hat and a monocle which pays homage to the original series. And just like his father, he passes the book onto his son as well. But the innocence of his son appears to be too far from being a thief himself.
Final Thoughts
The main character is a typical master of disguise and robbery series. It is not dissimilar to the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, King of Thieves, Catch Me If You Can, or multiple other heist movies and television series. It is worth the watch if this is your thing. But for me, it is always difficult to buy into the storyline and therefore not quite my “thing”.
