Little Shop of Horrors is intended to be a unique and ridiculous movie based off the off Broadway musical by the same name. Can a movie be serious if one of the plot is about one of the main characters, a human eating and talking plant from outer space? I do not think so. It is only fitting to add some music and turn it into a completely unique and ridiculous movie that will be remembered through the ages. As I watched this movie for the first time, I realized I not only recognized the plot but many of the songs as well.
Premise of Little Shop Of Horrors
Seymour works at a plant shop that is close to closing its doors for good. Seymour buys an interesting plant from a Chinese shop he decides to call The Audrey II, named after his coworker at the plant shop, whom he is in love with. The plant soon starts to wilt. That is until he pricks his finger and the plant drinks his blood. From there, he discovers that the plant requires human blood to grow and thrive. So, Seymour regularly pricks his finger and feeds him human blood. It ends up growing so large that it grows a crowd allowing the plant shop to thrive. That is until The Audrey II requires full grown humans to continue to survive.
The Star Studded 80’s Cast
The comedy icons of the 1980’s fill the cast of this movie, starting with Rick Moraines who plays Seymour, our geeky hero. My favorite actor growing up, Steve Martin, plays a villain and the first victim of The Audrey II. Other cast members include Jim Belushi, John Candy, and the fabulous Bill Murray. Despite the white male characters listed here, the cast is full of fantastic black actors that I would love to familiarize myself with. Including the voice of The Audrey II.
Final Thoughts
Little Shop of Horrors is the most unique and ridiculous movie about a human eating talking plant from outer space. I am not sure which outer space movie is more ridiculous, this or Starship Troopers. Talk about ridiculous movie plots. The idea of this movie is so ridiculous it is worth the watch, especially with the amazing comedy cast that puts it in action. Every once in a while, a local acting troupe puts this show on at a small theater. Everything about this movie screams that it would make a fantastic play. And for that reason, by play is the format I next hope to watch this story again.
