Life And Beth was a show that I avoided like the plague. If you read my last post about Amy Schumer you would understand why I turned from being a big fan to being not a fan at all. Every time this show came up as being suggested, I felt like perhaps I should give her one more shot to win me back. I gave her that shot with Life and Beth. And as I hoped, Life And Beth made me remember the glimpse as to why I had once upon a time liked her.
Premise of Life And Beth
Beth does not have the best relationship with her mother. She tries to like her mother but her mother has not done the best job possible at being a mother, which makes it difficult to like her. That is until Beth’s mother dies in a freak car accident. Now Beth must return to her childhood home in Long Island to address her past.
While in Long Island, Beth is forced to address some of her past memories and how it has affected the women she is today. As she comes to terms she decides to make some major life changes including leaving her mega hot boyfriend, leaving her job, and leaving Manhattan completely behind. Once again, Amy Schumer plays a character that has one last chance to change. However, this time around it feels more real to life.
My Opinion Of Amy Schumer Clarified
Amy Schumer is the celebrity that many other “normal” white women feel they can relate to. We are not size zeros. We have a bit of a sense of humor. And we enjoy life rather than let life happen to us. I was completely on board with this celebrity, until I read her book, The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo.
I understand it must be difficult to write a book as a celebrity that is both self promoting and does not come off as self important, but she failed at this miserably. If she was not self promoting, she came off as self important. If she was not coming off as self important, she was self promoting. Nothing about this story explained any hurdles she had to overcome. And this is where I started to feel different about her.
In Life and Beth, she started to retract from the self important person I felt like she is and started to be relatable again. The story told in this show explains what it is like to never be sure of yourself and to always second guess what choices are being made. It will be a long process, but this is one step toward the girl I once thought this celebrity was.
Final Thoughts
As someone who is not a big Amy Schumer fan, I enjoyed Life and Beth. I felt as though it brought her one step closer to being relatable again. If she continues down this path, I may be able to get back on board with her again. So for the time being, I will not cringe every time I see she came out with another story that her character has one last chance to make a change.
