King Richard is the tough story about a man bringing his daughters up in the world by pushing them into the world of tennis. Although he was tough on them, he pushed them to be nothing but the best. The story was heart warming and the film was well executed. Although I have recently had a hard time with Will Smith, I could not help but appreciate this film.
The Premise of King Richard
King Richard is the story of the making of Serena and Venus Williams into the best tennis stars of all time. They did not grow up in the cushy country club life. In fact, they needed to practice at a part that was full of drug dealers and other shady characters. But he did not allow this to come in the way of their success.
Their father, Richard, pushed them to practice and practice. He did his best to put them in front of the best coaches. He negotiated his way into the girls getting the best even though they could not afford the best. And we all know how this story ends. It ends with the best female tennis players of all time, and it does not hurt that there is a fat bank account to show for it.
The Will Smith Controversy
Internally, I struggle with how I feel about Will Smith. Growing up, I was a fan of The Fresh Prince. I was a fan of his first album with “Getting Jiggy With It.” I liked him. But every once in awhile he does something that throws a wrench into my liking him. This movie is proof that he is a talented person, that being said, his slapping of Chris Rock embarrassed himself, his wife, and the Williams family. Not cool.
Final Thoughts
King Richard was a great dramatic movie, well done about a heart warming story. It is a shame that Will Smith embarrassed himself at the Oscars, but I think I can look past it. Anyone who is familiar with the Williams girls will appreciate this movie. I left this movie wishing that my dad did the same for me for any sport. I could have been a contender!
