The beginning of this movie will make you laugh. You will have very sad feelings throughout, but mostly you will laugh. The lightheartedness of a tough topic gives the opportunity to make fun of some very odd things the Nazi’s did, such as encouraging children to look up to Adolf Hitler, look forward to joining the war effort, and describing Jews as if they were monsters.
The Premise Of Jojo Rabbit
A young boy, Jojo is excited to join Hitler’s army. He is a Nazi to the core. His imaginary friend is Hitler and there are Nazi posters all over his bedroom walls. His chats with his best friend, Yorki, who is also joining Hitler’s army, are by far the best parts of the movie. Their discussions about Jews goes on for days and is not at all accurate.
One day Jojo comes home looking for his mother but can’t find her. It is at this point he discovers a young Jew being hidden in the wall. The movie starts with Jojo helping Hitler in Hitler’s youth but then he starts to understand Jews better by making her divulge her Jewish secrets. But after weeks of interactions with her, he starts to realize she is just like him. The Jews are not a scary people, they are exactly the same as their German counter parts.
The Child Acting
The actors that play the children, Jojo and Yorki in Jojo Rabbit are nothing but amazing. From an amature here, I would think these roles are extensive and difficult. They are funny when the role calls for them to be funny. But because the topic is a serious one they needed to add some seriousness. Yet, I cannot image these characters being played by anyone else. They fit these characters perfectly. Whoever casted them knew exactly what to look for and they delivered.
Final Thoughts
I loved loved loved LOVED this fantastic movie. It delivered in making me laugh. It delivered in making fun of the reality of the ridiculous things the Nazis were capable of during WWII. And it was a very unique way of approaching a dark subject. If I write a post about the best movies I watched in 2021, Jojo Rabbit will for sure be included. I give it all the stars in the world, all the thumbs ups in the world, and all the jumping on the couch clappings in the world.
