Being single during family events is not easy and that is why every single person needs a Holidate to spend all holidays with. A person who you are not romantically involved with but comes around during the holidays as a date. You only need to see them a few times a year and there are zero strings attached.
Premise of the Holidate
Sloane, played by one of my favorites, Emma Roberts, is buggered by her family every holiday as to why she does not have a date. Her Aunt, played by another one of my favorites, Kristin Chenoweth, has it all figured out. She brings a date to whatever family holiday it is. Sloane then meets Jackson, a hot guy with the same issue and they decide to become Holidates to never get bothered again. Only getting together on every and each holiday.
Why This Premise Would Never Work In Real Life
The obvious answer is the When Harry Meets Sally response, men and women cannot just be friends, which is also proven in Holidate. But this is not my final answer. Do the parents really care that Sloane brings the same guy around every holiday? It does not prevent them from bringing around Dr. Faarooq. It does not prevent them from asking why she keeps bringing this guy around. What is the point then?
Is This a Christmas Movie?
I watched this movie on Christmas Eve along with my Chinese food (I am Jewish, remember?) as a way of getting into the spirit and watching a cheesy Christmas movie. But when deciding on a New Years movie to write about I realized, this movie is not just appropriate Christmas or New Years, but all holidays. Perhaps I will revisit Holidate for Halloween or St. Patricks Day or Easter. This is an appropriate for all holidays.
Final Thoughts
Although the idea is way too far fetched for reality, once getting past the ridiculousness, it was quite entertaining. Holidate movie is also fit for all holidays, not just Christmas making it a good movie to keep in the back of the mind especially if you too are bothered by family during the holidays.
