In Hacks, two opposing comics are brought together for the greater good of their careers. One is the OG that has a solid show that gets a bunch of laughs and the other is emerging as a writer who makes a simple mistake and is now no longer hirable. And in the end they build a friendship that every audience member saw coming.
The Premise of Hacks
Deborah Vance is near the end of her long and legendary comedic career. She started on a sitcom, moved to a talk show, and is now has a regular show in Las Vegas. Except, it is now time to switch it up and find a new act to replace her Las Vegas show.
Ava Daniels is an up and coming comedic writer. She started her career but it has stalled due to a single tweet and now no one will hire her. Her only hope is to help Deborah Vance revamp her Las Vegas show. Although her career is the start of the show for Ava, her crazy love life likes to make star appearances in every episode with hilarious attempts at finding sex.
The two together make for a hilarious friendship and a promising reentrance into the world of comedy. It takes some struggles to make the two opposing and strong personalities to connect. But when they do, they are happy with what emerges.
Nominations for Golden Globes
Although Hacks has been nominated for a number of awards, the one that I have been paying the most attention to that it has been nominated for is The Gold Globes. It has been nominated for both “Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy” and twice for “Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy”, one for each of the leading female actresses.
Final Thoughts
Although Hack is a great show, there are a number of other shows out right now that this how about promising comics is up against. Shows like The Great and Only Murders in the Building will be tough competition to Hacks. But just making the list makes this show worth the watch.
