Animating is a creative and challenging art form that requires patience, persistence, and a strong passion for storytelling. Animation has been something I have been interested in since college and now, in attempting to change my career, I am looking to add it to my tools and have been playing with it. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced animator, there are always new techniques and tools to learn. Here are 20+ tips I have recently learned for beginner animators to help you get started on your journey.

  1. Start with simple animations and gradually increase the complexity.
  2. Study the principles of animation, such as timing, spacing, anticipation, and follow-through.
  3. Experiment with different animation styles to find your own unique style.
  4. Use references, such as real-life footage, to help you with your animations.
  5. Focus on creating believable and appealing characters.
  6. Pay attention to details, such as lighting, shadows, and reflections.
  7. Use storyboarding to plan out your animations and avoid errors.
  8. Keep things consistent, especially with regards to character movements and expressions.
  9. Pay attention to the sound design and music, as these can greatly enhance your animations.
  10. Keep learning and exploring new animation techniques and tools.
  11. Practice, practice, practice!
  12. Collaborate with other animators and artists to learn from each other.
  13. Take breaks and don’t burn yourself out.
  14. Share your work with others and take constructive criticism in stride.
  15. Use social media platforms, such as Twitter and YouTube, to showcase your animations and reach a wider audience.
  16. Learn how to use a digital pen tablet, as it can greatly improve the quality of your animations.
  17. Take time to study the anatomy of different animals and creatures to improve your character design.
  18. Explore different animation software, such as Blender, After Effects, and Toon Boom, to find the one that best fits your needs.
  19. Stay motivated by setting goals and celebrating your achievements.

Animating is a rewarding and fulfilling experience that requires a combination of technical skills, creativity, and dedication.
