If you tell me that Seth Rogen made another movie, I’m watching it. If you tell me that Seth Rogen made a movie about a 100 year old Jew from a small town in Poland, I’m double there. An American Pickle was a funny story to a fellow Polish Jew like Seth Rogan and I nearly fell over with the resemblance of this story to the one I have been told about my Polish Jew family.
The Premise of An American Pickle
It starts with a poor man from a small town in Poland. He moves to New York City with thoughts of making money. He begins working in a pickle factory until one day he falls into a One hundred years later, he is released from the vat and into modern day New York City. He finds his next of kin and develops a relationship with him. Next thing you know they are feuding over business disagreements in the pickle industry. When they realize they can work together, the dream of making money becomes a reality.
The Similarities to My Family
As I was watching An American Pickle, I could not help but imagine my family going through the same thing. If you have read some of my past posts, you would know my family too was from a small town in Poland, where they were tailors, an unremarkable job. They too moved to New York City around the same time with hopes of making a better life. It was just a funny story to a fellow Polish Jew.
Final Thoughts
I don’t think it is a unique thing to have this same similarity that I share with Seth Rogan. That being said, it is a funny story to a fellow Polish Jew of any other background. Anyone else with this family similarity may find the same humor I did. And even those who do not relate, may find humor in this movie.
