Emma by Jane Austen Bored The Hell Out Of Me

Amazon.com: Emma (Dover Thrift Editions) (0800759406487): Jane ...

I was a kid in the 90’s which means of course, I have seen Clueless. Let me rephrase. Seen is not the right word. Obsessively watch it over and over again is more like it. To pass the time as children, my sister and I would recite the movie from beginning to end. “So I know what you are thinking, this must be a Noxzema commercial or something. But really, I live a way normal life for a teenage girl…”

And I digress before I even start. If you have not been exposed to both Clueless AND Emma, you need to know that it is the same story. Not the same story line but the SAME STORY.

In the book, when Harriet finds out that Mr. Elton (yes, as in Elton in Clueless) is set to marry someone other than her, all I can hear is Britney Murphy exclaiming “He’s going with Amber?!” Even the cover of the book, I cannot handle. The person portraying Emma is not Alicia Silverstone!

With the new movie coming out, I proposed we read Emma as a book club read and everyone jumped on board. As a bit of background, I typically read my book club books and listen to the books I read for myself. And for this book, I’m regretting not getting the audio version. The book drags on and on about every detail. Meanwhile my mind is matching the place in the book with the Clueless dialog.

I’m just not interested in long conversations about if someone should go to the post office or not. I suspect that if I was to listening to it, I would have digested this book much easier. I would have been able to listen to the gist of what is going on while filtering out the details. Much harder to do with a physical book.
