Madeline
There are a number of Mafia shows, but none as great and for the strong woman as Claws is. It is a group of strong women who just happen to find themselves working with the mob. They have the sensitive likeablity most women see in themselves, which makes the show relatable… except for the whole mafia part. With a bit of humor, this show it completely watchable for the regular strong woman like myself.
Premise of Claws
The first episode starts with Desna, played by the hilarious Niecy Nash, as the boss bitch of a nail salon in Florida. We soon learn that it is a front to launder money for a doctor’s office down the street selling prescriptions. And all behind it is Uncle Daddy (yes, that is the character’s nick name) and his crew of family who were raised in this type of questionable work. Mix in some Russian mob and Miami tackiness, and that is Claws.
The Cast
The main women are what carries the show and when a cast is led by Niecy Nash, you know the rest of the cast is great. Judy Reyes, from Scrubs, plays a quiet lesbian. Carrie Preston, from The Goodwife and TrueBlood, plays a seemingly housewife better suited for a country club than the jail cell she is more familiar with. The other two women, played by Karrueche Tran and Jenn Lyon, where two actresses I was not familiar with but will be looking out for in the future as this show has caused me to fall in love with them.
The Nails
Although the main job of the salon is to launder the money from the clinic down the street, the women still consider themselves artists. And whoever does the nails they present on the show is for sure an artist. These nails are 3-D and long. They are colorful and sparkly. They are like nothing I have never seen before.
Final Thoughts
Although I have been aware of this show for a few years now, I never thought I would turn it on. I ended up watching it on a whim and now I am hooked. The tacky Florida visuals got me to turn it on. The story line keeps me coming back for more.
