Two chapters into American Royals and I’m angered, not because this book was terrible. The premise of this book is such a good one BUT it is ruined with a bunch of drama filled love stories. Once it was accepted that this book was the most chick litty of all chick lit, I decided I was going to welcome it’s desire to be a love story. And I was able to talk myself into liking it.
The Premise of American Royals
The premise of the book is “what if America didn’t have a president and instead had a monarchy starting with George Washington.” Instead of having a presidency the US would now have American Royals. This premise is the whole reason I was interested in this book. And although tid bits are entwined, the love stories of the young people in this book are the real story. I never even felt like this premise of kingdom even was a character. SOOO disappointing.
Lack of Acknowledging the Premise
Another problem I had with the book is the lack of acknowledging this premise more. Because of the geeky kind of information seeking person that I am, I had to put down the book and do a little bit of research of my own. Who was George Washington’s kids? Who were there kids? And their kids? And who would be the monarch today? The biggest problem I have is that George Washington didn’t have any kids. He had step children, but no children. This was not addressed at all.
My Final Thoughts
That being said, the love stories were cute and, when taken at face value, I was able to enjoy them. I will be reading the next book in the American Royals book family, when it comes out and I will enjoy the story from the beginning because I know the level of gooshy love stories I will be reading.
