The Most Fun We Ever Had is a familiar family adventure not unlike many of Kristin Hannah’s books, one of my favorites. The story goes back and forth between the past and the current times to stitch the story of four sisters and their parents. Each of them have their own issues and turmoil and it is not always obvious until the story unravels.
The Premise Of This Family Adventure
The story starts by meeting the six main characters, four sisters and their parents. When we meet each of them, they each have an aspect that seems perfect. The oldest sister married into a wealthy family, the next sister has the perfect family, the third sister is successful and has a great relationship, and the youngest child is starting law school. Finally, the parents are so in love it seems as though nothing could tear them apart.
One by one we start to learn each of the secrets behind each of the family members and learn that their family is not as perfect as they appear. There is infant death. Death by cancer. Emotional cheating. An illegitimate child. Failed relationships. And lots and lots of rejection.
As their stories unravel, although it makes for good storytelling, the tragedies not so far off that it is far fetched and could never happen. Everything that happens in this book are things I will likely experience sometime in my life, which made me quite sad to think about. The only saving grace to my heart strings is that the family dog survives through the entire book.
Final Thoughts
Because this family adventure is so similar to something Kristin Hannah would write, you can imagine how much I enjoyed this book. I loved learning about this family who is entwined in one another’s lives and don’t completely understand the rest of the family.
