Premise of Call me By Your Name
Elio’s family invites an American man, Oliver, into their home in Italy for the summer. Elio has an instant attraction to Oliver and this obsession with a man is where the story begins. The first half of the book is about Elio trying to get Oliver’s attention and trying to figure out how to approach him. The second half of the book goes into their relationship and the real high highs and the real low lows and some of the perversions they have adopted in their sexual relationship. The book ends it fast forwards a decade and how this summer has affected the rest of their lives.
LGBT+ Literature and This Book
Homosexuality and a boy’s obsession with a man is the main theme of this book. It covers discovering sexuality and trying to determine where it lays for these two characters. Is this a one time thing that makes up a great memory or is this a new lifestyle? Are they living out a fantasy or could this be forever? I see this being a great read for anyone struggling with determining where their sexuality is.
Final Thoughts
Although not the best book I have ever read, I completely understand why this book was so popular and got a lot of attention. It covers a subject that was, up until recently, taboo. This is a must read for anyone who is dealing with understanding their sexuality.
